Your product is amazing. In fact, it’s so good that it should be able to sell itself. But, look at it, sitting all alone on a table or shelf or endcap.
Now, look at the other guy’s product, which isn’t as good as yours. But, that person has really put some effort into a display. It’s intriguing and eye catching, colorful and tells you about the product without going overboard.
Their product may not be as good as yours, but it looks better, and, unfortunately, that may be all that matters.
Don’t despair. You can turn that sad little display from drab to fab with a little effort and these six tips.
Stop People in Their Tracks
Merchandising displays should get people to stop and look at your product.
First, think about the message you want to send to a consumer. Is it simply your product showcased in an interesting way or will you incorporate signage in your display? What’s on the sign: a picture, a simple statement, or both? Whatever it is, it has to be eye catching and direct.
Second, select a color palate that communicates your message and aligns with the brand. Try to use bold, bright colors that evoke a specific feeling.
Third, think about the shape of your design. People expect to see displays that are square or rectangular. So, a curved design or one that incorporates unexpected shapes could be enough to make someone stop and look.
Don’t “Don’t Touch”
I know, you spent hours on a display and the last thing you want is someone moving things around and messing with your stuff. However, you do want people to buy the products.
A “Don’t Touch” sign is equivalent to a “Don’t Buy” sign. Let your displays be interactive. In fact, the more people can engage with—or feel engaged by—your display, the better they will feel about the products.
Keep It Neat
Having said that, you’re going to need to keep an eye on that display. If items are moved around too much, it is just going to look messy and unattractive.
Even displays that aren’t touched that often need basic upkeep. Displays that are covered in dust or appear worn out are unappealing.
People like displays that evoke an emotion, but how invested can someone really get in a bottle of shower gel?
However, what if that shower gel had a little scrubber brush and rubber ducky beside it? All of a sudden there is a sense of playfulness or nostalgia. Regardless, a feeling is conjured in the consumer, and that’s a powerful sales tool.
Innovative techniques can also help you show the product to people instead of simply telling them about it. Think of how you can simulate what it would be like to use a product and illustrate the exciting results.
Light It Up
You’ve toiled and sweated to construct the perfect display, and there it sits shrouded in darkness with weird shadows obscuring your hard work.
Don’t let that happen to you. You may have to mess with the overhead lighting or light from below with portable spotlights, but it’s worth the effort. The proper lighting can make the most commonplace products seem magical.
