Special Family Inc. was initiated by Rosalba Pena after her son was diagnosed with severe autism. She had difficulty finding support from the Latino community in the Dallas area, so she decided to create a resource to help other families with autistic children:
“For awhile I felt heartbroken. We lost almost everything to help our son who had been diagnosed with severe autism. I have never seen a child with autism as severe as my son, but I never lost hope and that led to an idea to help other parents who felt like us. This idea was carried out and now is not just a resource to help other parents like us. Special Family works to inform and help people through radio and television programs as well as over the internet.”
The non-profit organization has evolved to include other family topics, which caused Special Family to grow much bigger than Rosalba anticipated. To aid in the success and reliability of Special Family Inc., they frequently interview doctors, therapists, families with special needs children, and other like-minded organizations. In order to publicize their organization and share educational outreach programs, Special Family Inc. relies on local television, radio (Univision), print, social media and live-streaming of educational program talks on their website (www.specialfamily.tv). Their impact has become so widely spread that their audience includes people and groups from all over the world.
Because of Special Family Inc.’s prosperity, their organization has reached the Consulate General of Mexico located in Dallas, who has helped them establish a presence at all of the health and Latino community conferences and expos in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The Consulate General has also helped Rosalba contact diplomats from Mexico to establish a resource and voice for the Latino community. Special Family Inc. has even interviewed the Consulate General of Peru and Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins to further their reach.
How The Trade Group Stepped in to Help…
Because of the considerable amount of online traffic to their website, Rosalba wanted to have a visual background in her videos that would be memorable to the audience. She wanted something that would be instantly recognizable and highlight the organization’s cause. Little did she know it would be an unexpected connection through her husband that could bring her vision into reality.
Her husband, Ross Pena, previously worked at The Trade Group building exhibits, until he decided to focus on the non-profit full-time. Ross and Rosalba approached David Stone, Vice President of Operations at The Trade Group, with the story about their son and the journey to creating Special Family Inc., and David Stone decided The Trade Group needed to help.
After Rosalba provided graphic ideas for the display, The Trade Group set to work designing a clean backdrop using a 10’x20’ pre-owned exhibit that would be donated free of charge to Special Family Inc. The plan is to take this display to all of their interviews and live-stream programs to use as a backdrop that will hopefully visually impact a bigger audience to become involved and support families with special needs children across the globe.
In Rosalba’s words:
“Thank you, David, for being part of this project and for your contribution. I will be thankful to you, your family, and The Trade Group every day of my life and those families who receive help through our program.”
